Evidence of Learning

Briefly describe an example (or provide a hyperlink to your work) to demonstrate your level of learning.

1 Examine how attitudes towards linguistic standards empower and oppress language users. Explore how views on language standards can affect speakers positively and negatively. 4 I learned that language standards can affect speakers in positive and negative ways through readings such as Hughes’ “Theme for English B,” Tan’s “Mother Tongue,” and Marshall’s “Finna.” Each piece helped me understand how linguistic expectations can lead to discrimination but also how embracing voice can be empowering.
2 Explore and analyze, in writing and reading, a variety of genres and rhetorical situations. There are many genres and rhetorical situations authors can use to deliver their argument or story. 4 By reading and comparing “Mother Tongue” and “The NYC Accent: Perceptions vs Reality,” I saw how similar topics like language discrimination and misunderstanding can be delivered through different genres like personal narrative and research based articles.
3 Develop strategies for reading, drafting, collaborating, revising, and editing. Finding effective strategies during the stages of writing. 4 While writing my LLN, I went through multiple stages such as brainstorming, drafting, peer review, and 1on1 discussion with the professor. These helped me see which strategies helped to improve my writing the most. Also, a visit to the Writing Center gave outside feedback, even though it was not as helpful to me personally.
4 Recognize and practice key rhetorical terms and strategies when engaged in writing situations. Identify and use key rhetorical terms and strategies in my writing. 4 During writing LLN it was important to have a targeted audience. Identifying the audience helped me choose the right style and choice of words.
5 Understand and use print and digital technologies to address a range of audiences. Utilize technology to assist with delivering a message to a specific audience. 5 Based on my and peers’ Translation 1 and 2 projects, I learned that there are many ways to convey a message using technology and visuals, such as videos, posters, and memes.
6 Locate research sources (including academic journal articles, magazine and newspaper articles) in the library’s databases or archives and on the Internet and evaluate them for credibility, accuracy, timeliness, and bias. Use databases which have reliable sources.

3 I used Google Scholar and the library database to find academic articles relevant to my topic for synthesis.
7 Compose texts that integrate a stance with appropriate sources, using strategies such as summary, analysis, synthesis, and argumentation. Write texts that clearly express my stance and support it with clear evidence. 3 In my synthesis assignment, I attempted to make a clear argument and support it with evidence.
8 Practice systematic application of citation conventions. Follow and practice the standard format of citation. 3 Citing sources on synthesis essay following MLA standard.
